Docker Disk Cleaner for Mac
On macOS, Docker runs inside a virtual machine whose raw disk image grows indefinitely and never automatically shrinks. Reclaim 30–64 GB of trapped storage safely.
Why does Docker take so much disk space on macOS?
Because macOS is not Linux, Docker Desktop creates a lightweight Linux VM backed by a raw APFS sparse disk image stored in ~/Library/Containers/com.docker.docker/Data/vms/0/data/Docker.raw. Even when you delete images inside Docker, the host macOS disk does not automatically release the allocated space back to Finder.
Pre-allocated virtual disk capacity that remains inflated even after running `docker rm`.
Stale multi-stage build layers, git checkout intermediates, and dependency caches.
Untagged <none>:<none> images from successive `docker build` runs.
How CleanYourMac Space Reclaims Docker Storage
Docker VM Disk Size, Measured
Finds Docker.raw (or Docker.qcow2) and shows its real on-disk size, flags whether Docker Desktop is running, and guides you through the safe cleanup — docker system prune plus Docker's disk-size setting — instead of deleting the VM file and losing your containers.
Dangling Cache Detection
Finds disconnected layers and orphaned build cache entries, keeping active containers and production databases completely untouched.
Colima & Podman Support
Works across Docker Desktop, Colima, Podman machines, and OrbStack containers located in user home directories.
Zero Data Loss Safety
Performs pre-flight state validation to ensure no live write locks are held before performing disk operations.
Step-by-step guides
Prefer to do it by hand? These guides show the exact Terminal commands.
